Spirituality is NOT About Building a Better YOU!

February 9, 2012 by

I have been struggling. Over what you might ask? Well, really over nothing. Over the fact that I feel frustrated, tired, unfilled, incomplete, alone…you know all the human things that everyone can feel a hundred times a day but that the Spiritually-minded judge.

What I realized (with some guidance from the Divine and my Divine supporters) as I listened to the lyrics of BAD by U2 (see below), is that I have been trying to build a better ME! What I’m realizing across the board is that there is so much hype to build a better YOU! I feel like we tend to miss the boat because of the hype. I’m wide awake*.

I don’t have to build a better me (and you don’t have to build a better YOU!), because the more I focus on my Soul, I don’t exist. The Divine exists and the experience of that exists. All Spirituality does is help me on that path to navigate that “being” gracefully. I still have to feel all of it. I still have to experience all of it.

Spirituality and spiritual tools help me to Surrender*, Dislocate*.

There are no words for this deeper connection and nothingness of you. What I can tell you is that this nothingness scares the hell out of people. It confronts our humanity and we feel threatened of not being an individual.  We are afraid that we will fade away. The experience of being in this connection is the exact opposite of all those fears.

No one has the answers. They just have tools. I sincerely invite you into the nothingness. I invite you to stop building a better you. The awareness is not out there…it is within, deeply within the nothingness. I believe connection is the way to be in the nothingness…Tools give you the power to know you are safe. Let it go. Be wide awake!
I’m not sleeping, oh no, no, no*

If you twist and turn away
If you tear yourself in two again
If I could, yes I would
If I could, I would
Let it go
If I could throw this
Lifeless lifeline to the wind
Leave this heart of clay
See you break, break away
Into the night
Through the rain
Into the half-light
Through the flame

If I could through myself
Set your spirit free
I’d lead your heart away
See you break, break away
Into the light
And to the day

Oooh oooh, oooh oooh, oooh oooh oooh…

To let it go! And so fade away
To let it go!
And so fade away
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
Wide awake
I’m not sleeping, oh no, no, no

If you should ask then maybe they’d
Tell you what I would say
True colors fly in blue and black
Blue silken sky and burning flag
Colors crash, collide in blood shot eyes

Oooh oooh, oooh oooh, oooh oooh oooh…

If I could, you know I would
If I could, I would
Let it go

This desperation
In temptation

Let it go
And so fade away
To let it go, oh yeah
And so fade away
To let it go, oh No
And so fade away
I’m wide awake
I’m wide awake
Wide awake
I’m not sleeping oh no no

Really refreshing post, Jennifer. It is a very interesting topic. I agree, that if I aim at being a better Matt O’Grady, the guy who owns an online marketing company, married, 1 child, etc. the story about my life, my personality, my status in society and so on, it is a fruitless task. Sure, I can aim at being a better Husband and Dad, and person, etc but all of that will amount to nothing if I am not focused on The Main Intention(from my perspective of course) which is alignment with The Source of All. In fact, I was thinking of this just this morning, how focusing on the details of my life does not compare with the importance and over-arching remembrance who and what I Really Am, a Divine Child of God. When that is my focus, I am in the Vortex, I am Aligned. Details, will come and go, troubles and joys will pass away, yet this opportunity for Remembering and living from that place is my intention and is always fulfilling, enlightening, and full of being-ness. Thanks for the reminder!

Ah, the nothingness. The sweet unfulfilled and totally fulfilling nothingness. Thanks Jen for this insightful post.

Matt, I love the “focusing on the details of my life” part…very insightful and true!

    Kathy: How sweet IT is!

Oh… how Ego hangs on for dear life!

    Great article, Jennifer.

It reminds me of how ENOUGH we really are. It takes courage to stop reaching for MORE because if we stop that we real do have to face OURSELVES and that scares so many people. I know you know this… by doing so, by facing SELF and our SOUL we actually tap into our richer selves. Our whole selves. What an amazing place to lead from! Not always easy to do but remarkable when it happens.

The perfect insight for the morning I was experiencing (notice past tense). The question of “what else can I do to get….” circulating in my head. when I released all that, what is left is that deep connection with God, Divine, Nature (my team as I call them). The knowing that no matter what I “do”, I am connected, loved and supported. it is for me to reach out, up and feel that connection. the asking, to be in connection/community is the quest. To ask, without judging myself as inadequate, incomplete, unworthy. Your words remind me that asking, is exactly what creates the deeper connection, both in myself and with GDN. Even when tears flow, they are of releasing and relief, not fear. Namaste, Jen

YES Jennifer! Thank you for speaking so simply about what troubles so many. We are always already perfect, whole and complete. The more we connect deeply within to that Truth and align with it in our BEingness and doingness, the more Peace, Love and Joy we experience as our human selves. It’s how we walk on Earth connected to Source Energy. It’s how we align with Universal Law. It’s how we co-create with Spirit that which is our highest and best experience. This is the path to true Freedom, and the way to bring Heaven into Earth!
    Blessings, Love and Light!

    Jennifer –

Beautiful said. This particular U2 song has special significance for me as well. Thank you for the reminder. And the precious message you’re sharing. My experience has been that every time I concentrate on being a better me I am actually reinforcing that I am broken and in some way need to be “fixed”. This is very dangerous because we do loose ourselves in this process and embrace a feeling of not being enough….ever. The truth IS deep within us. If we just allow it to be. If we just surrender. View the sign posts along the way, digest the lessons being taught and reflected back to us as nothing more than that today we learned something new. No judgment. No extra analytics required. Just say yes and then be, in the quietness and stillness. I realize that some people who are not yet at the place of surrender may want to egg me for saying this. But in time, the realization that who you are now if enough. Who you can be will emerge so much more easily if you stop forcing it and criticizing yourself under the guise of spirituality.

With love and light to all…… M

This is IT! Universe knows that ever since I was little, I somehow got the message that something is wrong with me. I don’t think I’m alone in this sentiment. Well, with that message in mind, what else is a girl to do but be on a lifelong quest to “fix” me? Thank you for this inspiring article that we are unbroken. It’s only our thinking that we are that makes us so. XO

Maria…Well said! Surrender is sometimes the hardest thing to do…

    Ann: You are welcome!

I’m so honored to have you all in my community!

    Great post Jennifer!

It was a bit scary for me to let go of this notion but what a relief! You mean, there’s nothing inherently wrong with me? I’m not broken? Yes!

And I love the powerful idea that the spiritual and the mundane are all rolled together because the spirit (through idea) beget the mundane and so it’s all wonderful even when I don’t see that.

There’s nothing wrong here, just a handful of things I may not like.

Very powerful stuff Jennifer! Thanks again!

Great article Jennifer, when we realize our soul is running through our body and how much our higher self is perfect we automatically become whole and to change in to what we were born here to be and do.
Opening the heart fully to love the divine self.

    Frank: I felt the same way… 🙂

Joseph…We are one with the Divine…

One of the most brilliant articles I’ve read in some time Maria! Thank you. It’s so true in everything. Even in marketing, building a better you is not ever as effective as focus on those you serve, those you are connected to. Thanks you for this brilliant piece that so succinctly puts a truth we have all known for some time, but may have forgotten.

I love your post Jennifer! I have been strugling to be the perfect one for a long time, I knew I was resisting something and I couldn’t see what it was, I guess I was too focus on my own struggles or illusions, until one day I surrender and just became ME and … wow, what a feeling, it is like a heavy weight has been removed from my back. It is all about understanding who we are within and embrace that, no matter what, once we know that is the truth, that we are perfect beings full of love and despite of any experiences good or bad, we are always perfect and protected by Spirit, by love, and just be able to see what we can learn from them. xo
